  • World War I changed the map of humankind forever. But the peace that ensued after the Treaty of Versailles in 1919 could not mend the world's monetary system -- the gold standard. Once currencies were refixed to gold, they came under speculative attacks and government intervention. The Second World War shifted the balance of power between continents. War debt forced Britain to cede its India, Middle East, and eventually African, South Asian and American possessions, bringing the 350 year old Empire to a close. The conference of Bretton Woods would give the nation the opportunity to cinch its control on the world's financial system by creating American controlled monetary institutions and stamping the dollar with reserve currency status. Most traders today probably consider the current m...

  • Amazon is taking a lesson from basic economic theory in developing an innovative leasing system for its EC2 Instances cloud computing service. Amazon's recently announced leasing system for its EC2 cloud, named EC2 Spot Instances, takes advantage of those down times. Rather than charging a flat rate, EC2 Spot Instances have a floating price point determined by how much of the overall system is in use as a sort of processor cycle stock exchange. The EC2 Spot Instances take advantage of unused portions of Amazon's EC2 Instances cloud.

  • This study reveals how a Korean monetary transmission mechanism evolves in the tumultuous decade of the 1990s. We show that (i) contractionary monetary policy shocks have more explanatory power for the post-crisis periods than for the pre-crisis period; (ii) the effects on output from external shocks attributed to the oil price and the U.S. federal fund rates are mixed; (iii) there is little positive spillover effect from the U.S. to Korea through the trade channel; and (iv) there is a positive spillover effect from the international capital market channel.

  • The EPA is proposing National Uniform Emission Standards for Storage Vessels and Transfer Operations, Equipment Leaks and Control Devices, herein referred to as Uniform Standards. The EPA is also proposing supplemental revisions to the National Uniform Emission Standards General Provisions, which were proposed with the National Uniform Emission Standards for Heat Exchange Systems, signed by the EPA Administrator on November 30, 2011. The proposed Uniform Standards would be referenced, as appropriate, in future revisions to new source performance standards and national emission standards for hazardous air pollutants for individual source categories that are part of the chemical manufacturing and refining industries that have storage vessels and transfer operations, equipment leaks or con...

  • This paper studies the dynamics of the Taka-U.S.Dollar exchange rate for Bangladesh by augmenting the Quantity Theory of Money. The standard cointegration methodology (Engle and Granger, 1987) is employed in addition to the ARDL (Autoregressive Distributed Lag) procedure. The ADF and KPSS tests reveal data nonstationarity, but with different orders of integration. As a result, the ARDL procedure is invoked following (Peseran et al., 2001) to search for cointegrating relationship among the variables. On the evidence of cointegration, the vector error- correction model (VECM) is estimated. The negative sign of the coefficient of the error-correction term and its statistical significance in terms of the associated t -value confirm unidirectional causal flow from broad money supply and real...

  • This article studies the response of Mexico's monetary policy to inflows of workers' remittances. Previous studies have shown that remittances can have an impact on several macroeconomic variables of the receiving country (e.g. exchange rate, inflation and output, among others). Mexico has the largest inflow of remittances in Latin America and the second largest inflow in the world. As such, it may be the case that the monetary authority in Mexico is taking these flows into account when selecting their monetary policy stance. Overall, the results of this study indicate that remittance shocks do not have a large impact on Mexico's monetary policy variables. This seems to suggest that Mexico's Central Bank main concern is inflation and that the potential appreciation of the Mexican curren...

  • This study examines the short run and long run causal relationships among macroeconomic variables and equity market returns in the emerging equity market for the period of 6/1998 to 6/2008 by employing the VAR framework on monthly data. Macroeconomic variables include industrial production index, consumer price index, money supply, exchange rate, foreign portfolio investment, Treasury bill rates and oil prices. Results support the finance theory and provide evidence that long term relationship exist among equity market and macroeconomic factors. Unidirectional causality has been observed flowing from consumer price index, exchange rates, money supply and interest rate to equity market. • Property rights are a prerequisite for economic growth. When assessing the economic functions of property, it is generally assumed that financial property rights are as beneficial for economic growth as are property rights over tangible assets. This Article will discuss five paradigms that can be used in order to restructure financial property under economic crises, particularly those affecting emerging market economies: the emergency paradigm, the monetary paradigm, the valorist paradigm, the social justice paradigm, and the bankruptcy paradigm. Two methodological features are worth emphasizing. First, the kind of financial crisis on which the Article will focus takes place in countries where financial liabilities are mostly denominated by foreign currencies. Second, the Article will d...
