In order to cover Australia, a land mass almost equal to the Lower 48 of the U.S., a scout needed to run tryouts in every corner: Hobart, Melbourne, Perth, Port Hedlund, Brisbane, Sydney, Darwin, Thursday Island, Alice Springs, Cairns, Canberra, Adelaide and Lismore.

Spring starts this week, an hour earlier than it did last year, although I'm not sure how the president worked that out with the sun. Spring, in case you've missed it the first 49 times around, is the season of rebirth and renewal, of growth and new beginnings. It's the season of blooming, which causes us to wonder why a daffodil and onion are so similar yet taste so different and where, exactly, Holland is (it's north of Zealand, south of Friesland and east of Flevoland, silly!). It's also the season when an uncanny number of newspapers run baseball-as-a-metaphor-for-life columns. This is not one of them.
