The days of sand and surf are almost a distant memory. Ice and snow are still many weeks away.
Now is the perfect time to go flea-marketing.

TRENTON, N.J. (AP) -- Used to be, if you wanted a knockoff handbag or fake fragrance, Lower Manhattan's Canal Street was a mecca.
But with flea markets across the country now carrying the same kind of counterfeit products with poser trademarks, authorities warn that shoppers might get more than they bargain for in poor quality and safety risks while helping fund criminal syndicates in some cases.

WOODBRIDGE -- Rita Perrotti had excellent instincts. "My mother liked to sell old stuff at the weekly Milford flea market," said her daughter, Rosann Botte of Orange. "One time, she had this old suitcase she was trying to sell. I said to her, 'Ma, you can't sell this. It has a big hole in it.' She replied, 'Never mind. If no one buys it, I'll throw it away.' The day went on and we were getting ready to go home and we still hadn't sold the suitcase. So I said, 'Ma, do you want me to throw the suitcase away?' She said, 'No. You never know.' At that very moment, this guy came along, picked up the suitcase and looked it all over. He said to my mother, 'Do you have the key for this?' She said she didn't. HAMDEN -- George Sweeney Jr. had a passion for hockey. Sometimes, he was a little too passionate about it. "My son played hockey throughout high school and college, and my husband would get very loud and boisterous in the stands," said his wife of 47 years, Kathleen. "He would literally be screaming, and I would tell him to calm down. Often, I would end up sitting at one end of the rink and he would be at the other end.
Sweeney, who died Jan. 1 at age 79, also was strict with his kids, and taught them right from wrong. "He tried to steer them down the right path," said his wife. "If they got out of hand, he would give them a certain look. That's all he had to do. They knew what he expected from them, and they toed the line."
