Lewis features the diversity springs from Senegal's place in the West African Ecoregion, one of the richest and most diverse fishing grounds in the world. The upwelling of cold water along the coast brings nutrients from the depths of the ocean to feed over a thousand of species of fish. Lewis says that by the middle of the twentieth century, people in the government started to realize that the biodiversity of their waters was an asset that could be harnessed, caught, frozen, and airlifted to places in Europe or America or Asia where buyers would pay a lot of money to get it. He explains how fishery resources were sufficiently exploited.

HOPEDALE, La. - When Kenny LeFebvre is out of work, so are the two men who help him haul glistening blue crabs from the waters he's fished since he quit school at 14. So are his sister and brother-in- law, who sell him bait, buy back the catch, pack it up, then resell it to buyers who put it on dinner tables in Maryland.
And so are thousands of other families just like theirs in some of the world's richest fishing grounds, livelihoods in limbo as winds from exactly the wrong direction - the southeast - threaten to push an oil slick the size of Puerto Rico ever closer to the fragile, fingerlike bayous.

Sea squirts, an invasive animal found on the Georges Bank seabed a year ago, now cover at least 40 square miles, a sixfold increase, say researchers who inspected the offshore area earlier this month.
Scientists say colonies of the sea squirts have created dense, slimy mats over gravel and sand on the northern edge of Georges Bank, historically one of the most productive fishing grounds in the world.
