CARS *** 1/2 Like every one of the six previous features Pixar has delivered. Cars is smart, snappy, entertaining cinema. And like every one of those six previous features, it's grounded in fundamentally strong storytelling, but it's also wise in a way that's almost enough to make you want to weep. That's probably not what you're expecting from a premise involving anthropomorphized auto racing. Our flawed hero is Lightning McQueen (voiced by Owen Wilson), a hotshot rookie convinced he's destined for greatness. He manages a tie for the Piston Cup points lead despite a bout of egomania in the season's final race, leading to a three-way race-off. But on the cross-country trip to the venue in California, Lightning is inadvertently left behind in the dying Southwest town of Radiator Springs....

The SOMOS Summer Writers' Series continues on Friday (Aug. 17) at the Harwood Museum of Art. It's billed as a "Triple Treat!" with poets Dana Levin and Mark Scott. Electric cellist Michael Kott will weave solos between sets. "Poetry is a searchlight that shines into each of us, our darkest places, those things we often leave unsaid because we can't find the words," said series curator Magdalene Smith. "Well, a poet's job is to find those words and cast that light. What I love about these two poets is that they are down to earth, gritty almost in their unflinching observations." Levin will be reading from her book, "Wedding Day" (Copper Canyon, 2005), as well as some recent work. "My parents died in quick succession in 2002, which spurred an investigation into death, from forensic anthro...

as [Ella Fitzgerald] makes connection after connection with people who would assist her to realize her purpose in life. Amongst her "angels" were Linton, a singer in the Chick Webb band, who recommended Ella to the famous Harlem band-leader that became her mentor. Promoter Norman Grantz was another. He fought to have Ella and other jazz musicians play in integrated venues such as Carnegie Hall, and other major venues throughout the world. Through her talent and these associations Fitzgerald became known as one of the greatest female singers of all time, earning the title of "The First Lady of Song.

It's been almost 10 years since my visit to the island of Crete in October 2000. 1 was staying on a back street in the seaside town of Chania - it wasn't a very fancy hostel, not even 10 rooms. I walked out on to my balcony in search of the Greek morning sun, and there to my surprise I found [Jenny], reading the book "Memoirs of a Geisha."It turned out that our two adjacent rooms shared a common balcony, so from her point of view I had walked out on to her balcony! We struck up a conversation and arranged our first date, a 6-hour trek down the longest gorge in Europe, the Samaria Gorge. I learned all about her 5 sisters back in Australia, and how the girlfriend she'd been backpacking with had run out of money and turned back, leaving Jenny to continue on her own to Crete. My good fortun...

Well it's not better for me. It's like biting into a burger and finding out it's just grilled tofu. It's like drinking tea in the morning when you're used to coffee. When you read what passes for a daily paper these days, you know how Catholics feel at a Protestant wedding: There's just a vague inescapable feeling that something is just not right, although everyone seems to politely go along. Reading the news on the Internet is even more disconcerting; for me news sites are to the newspaper what Unitarians are to real churchgoers. (Don't get me wrong; they're such good people.)
How do you make a skinny little paper bridge the gap from first light through second cup of coffee into the dawn of wakefulness? It's not easy. I find myself reading the six-pointtype list of who just went bankru...

Falbo focuses on a specific archive that reveals about the connection between an emerging literary discourse--the discourse of Romanticism--and representations of literature as a special, a-historical, category of writing. [Don Roberson], Monterey County's foremost birding expert, says the farm's proximity to the ocean and Elkhorn Slough, its eucalyptus grove and freshwater ponds (which dot the landscape like ink spots), make for a one-of-a-kind habitat for birds. Back in 1990, Doug George saw a Smith's longspur here, which was the first time that the small ground feeding bird was observed in California. In 1985, a little stint, a bird almost never found in North America, was spotted by John Mariana on the farm. "It was a vagrant from Siberia," Roberson says.
Roberson is a rare discovery himself. He caught the bird-watching bug at 13 years old after reading about the Audubon's Christmas Bird Count in Reader's Digest. That Christmas, he went out alone with a field guide and marked the birds that he observe...
