OXFORD - Two-time champion Dennis Spencer Jr. held off a late- race challenge from Travis Adams to claim his first feature win of 2007 - the Superior Concrete Trophy Dash on Saturday night at Oxford Plains Speedway. Spencer led wire-to-wire in a race slowed by just two cautions, the second of which led to a three-lap sprint to the finish.

Tommy Lee Jones' The Three Burials of Melquiades Estrada is so much more than pretty good. It's pretty durned close to being great. A loose, generous, funky little oater with a deliciously ghoulish sense of humor, Jones' feature directorial debut is shot through with so many Sam Peckinpah references and homages you'll be tempted to think Tommy Lee swallowed Bloody Sam's recent DVD box set. Jones kidnaps [Barry Pepper]'s thickheaded border guard and dresses him in the dead man's clothes. In a scene of astonishing thoughtfulness, [Pete Perkins] drags him to Melquiades' house and makes him sit at the dinner table. Those concerned that a 2 1/2 hour movie titled "Biutiful" might bear some of the attributes typically characterized as "pretentious" will not be reassured by the opening, whispered dialogue, with the camera trained only on two sets of intertwined hands, and the subsequent scene in which an unknown figure informs that when owls die, "they spit hairballs out of their beaks. You know it's weighty stuff, indeed, when we're talking about owl hairballs.

June 26, 2012 will be a historic day. It'll be the first time El Paso County residents won't vote at precincts in a primary election. At Thursday's board meeting, El Paso County commissioners unanimously approved a mail-only ballot for next year's primary races.
