Interpreting freedom of speech
The First Amendment to the Constitution assures our right to freedom of speech. In my opinion, and what appears plausible, flag burning or burning a Bible or Quran should not be considered a part of that freedom. It is an act, not a verbal statement. Therefore it should be treated as an act of violence.

Can you name the five rights and freedoms guaranteed under the First Amendment of the U.S. Constitution? Sadly, not many of the people asked in the 2011 State of the First Amendment national survey could do so.
The first step to protecting our rights is understanding them and recognizing their source. The less we know, the easier it would be for the government to water down, if not take away, those rights.

As far as attorney Floyd Abrams is concerned, there were very good reasons why the framers of the U.S. Constitution dedicated their First Amendment to the issue of free speech.

The Constitution of this great nation began with the statement, "We the people." The First Amendment of this Constitution protects the right of the people to peaceably assemble and to petition the government for a redress of grievances. On May 10, 2011, a member of our local government addressed a group of citizens, assembled at a City Council meeting to participate in the decision making process of the city of Petersburg.
