  • MUMBAI, India -- Indian authorities appeared to be gaining control of the crisis in Mumbai on Friday, as commandos scoured two charred luxury hotels, searching for survivors of the bands of gunmen who unleashed a day and a half of chaos here. At a third location, a Jewish community center where remnants of the well-organized squads of attackers appeared to have dug in, black-clad commandos dropped from a helicopter onto the roof Friday morning, The Associated Press reported. Supported by sharpshooters firing from nearby buildings, the soldiers prepared an assault to retake the community center.

  • Last week's attacks in Mumbai exposed numerous fault lines in India and between it and its neighbor, Pakistan. How the Indian government, and the international community, respond to the attack and its aftermath will determine whether the fault lines heal or are widened. For three days, it appears 10 gunmen shot and killed dozens of people and set fire to a luxury hotel in India's financial capital. An immediate question was how only 10 men could unleash such carnage. The answer lies, partially, in the fact that, despite warnings about the potential of terrorist attacks, Indian security forces are poorly equipped and communications between agencies lacking. City police, for example, often don't have guns. Sharpshooters, dispatched to take out the gunmen, didn't have high- powered telesco...

As investigators sought to unravel the attack on Mumbai, stepping up questioning of the lone captured gunman, airports across India were put on high alert amid fresh warnings that terrorists planned to hijack an aircraft.

  • With its profusion of languages, ethnic groups and regional diversities, with its unique caste system, with its contrast between information technology and industry billionaires and the nearly 300 million people who live below the poverty line, with its mixture of Mahatma Gandhi's nonviolent philosophy and outbreaks of savage communal violence, and with its success as a parliamentary democracy despite having 400 million people who cannot read or write, India remains a bewilderingly complex country. A powerful moral leader as well as a wily politician, Gandhi wanted Indians to be proud of their past, to wear Indian rather than foreign dress, to challenge their colonial overlords through peaceful protest and noncooperation and not through violence, and to eliminate discrimination against...

  • MUMBAI, India -- The lone surviving gunman in the Mumbai attacks made a surprise confession at his trial Monday, saying he was recruited by a militant group inside Pakistan after he left a low- paying job and went looking for training to become a professional robber. The confession by Ajmal Kasab bolstered India's charges that terrorist groups in neighboring Pakistan were behind the well- planned attack, and that it is not doing enough to clamp down on them. The attack in which 166 people died severely strained relations and put the brakes on a peace process between the nuclear- armed enemies.
