We want to extend our profound gratitude to the West Haven Fire Department for providing children at the West Haven Child Development Center Inc. with holiday gifts. The abundance of toys and stuffed animals that firefighter John Drost delivered to us allowed each child enrolled at the center to receive a gift. Our needier families picked out several toys for their children. It was obvious from the looks on the children's faces that the donations meant a great deal to them. It also meant a lot to our staff to be able to be a part of such a wonderful operation.
Scott Haskell's photo (BDN, March 8) of Bangor firefighter Bruce Johnson holding a cat he rescued in a recent downtown fire speaks volumes about a firefighter's twin gifts of character - courage and compassion. I hope someone has the good judgment to submit this photo to a contest somewhere, especially for animal-protection purposes.
Why would anyone want to read a memoir? To learn firsthand secrets about a notable life or time. To feel a kinship with someone who seems more famous - who at least has a book contract - but turns out to be just like you.
