A Tulsa company's innovation, already credited with saving a number of lives in the steel industry, is being used by U.S. Army soldiers serving in Afghanistan to protect them from lethal roadside bombs.
The company, Global Safety Labs Inc., has developed two products that are transforming fire protection, said Andrew Allen, president and CEO. Allen, a retired NASA astronaut and Marine Corps pilot, was appointed GSL president and CEO in July 2008.

Hughes signs security deal
Hughes Network Systems, of Germantown, and NextAlarm Monitoring Services announced a distribution agreement Wednesday through which Hughes will carry NextAlarm's signals from wireless security cameras and wireless alarm systems via satellite Internet connection. Hughes said it has developed a unique communication protocol for mass- market security monitoring of the broadband connection. NextAlarm offers burglary and fire protection products for homes and small businesses. Under the agreement, Hughes will offer all of NextAlarm's products and services to subscribers of its HughesNet service.

COLLEGE PARK, Md., June 21, 2011 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ --The Department of Fire Protection Engineering at the University of Maryland, College Park's A. James Clark School of Engineering graduated its 1,000th undergraduate student earlier this spring. The department is one of only a handful of such programs across the country, and the only one offering accredited undergraduate degrees. Its graduates form a close-knit community whose members play leading roles in corporate, government, and academic institutions.
Coincidently, the 20th Ph.D. degree where the principal research advisor was a faculty member in the department also was awarded. The department expects to graduate its 300th master's degree student this summer.
