BEAVERCREEK TWP., Greene County -- Twenty-five part-time Beavercreek Twp. firefighters were laid off Tuesday night to head off a $520,000 deficit, township officials said. Township trustees cut the jobs, saying it was necessary following voters' defeat of a 3.9-mill fire protection levy in May. About 77 percent of the residents rejected the levy, which would have raised $4.8 million a year.
