In plain terms this means that the installer absolutely must consider what type of system this will be before running any wires or purchasing any peripheral equipment.
[Richard Roberts]: The trend in the system-connected smoke detector market is toward wireless and addressable technologies. The reason for the trend is because both technologies minimize the installation costs and provide more accurate notification. Obviously wireless detectors are easier to install and more cost effective than hardwired units, particularly for applications where it's difficult, or impossible to run conductors.

A communications glitch took fire alarm systems at numerous buildings in Allegheny County offline this week but did not lead to any delays in response to real emergencies, Pittsburgh fire officials said. Ray DeMichiei, the city's deputy director of emergency management and homeland security, said Marshall-based Guardian Protective Services notified the department that the systems were back on line Tuesday afternoon.
