When South Portland Police Chief Ed Googins was an evidence technician for Portland police in the 1970s, fingerprint analysis involved photographs, index cards and lots of labor, with limited results.
Now he's hoping that a regional forensics lab will give his detectives access to AFIS, the automated fingerprint identification system. The costly equipment allows investigators to submit fingerprints from a crime scene to a computerized national database, quickly yielding the 12 most likely suspects in the system, greatly reducing the amount of work that must be done manually.
