A Springfield attorney who represented himself at trial received a $50,000 verdict after a business contact failed to deliver on a promised finder's fee. Joseph Sheppard III made an oral agreement with Ron Layher that he would receive 1 percent of the sales price of a live theater on the strip in Branson if he found a buyer for the establishment. Sheppard contacted a potential buyer and passed his information on to Layher. That individual's buying group ultimately purchased the property.
The ruling means Utah business consultant Ira Sachs will not get a finder's fee for locating a buyer for United Park City Mines Co. and the 8,300 acres it owned in or near Park City because Sachs did not have a real estate license at the time of the company's sale, as required by the Act.
Federal law does not preempt a borrower's claim that her mortgage broker violated state law by charging her an excessive finder's fee when she obtained a mortgage refinance loan, Maryland's highest court has ruled in reversing a dismissal. State law provides that a mortgage broker that obtains more than one loan on the same property within a 24-month period may only charge a finder's fee with respect to that portion of the additional loan that is in excess of the initial loan.

A Frederick County homeowner whose mortgage broker charged her nearly $20,000 for two refinancings less than a year apart will get another chance to argue that the second fee violated state law. In a case of first impression in Maryland, the Court of Appeals held yesterday that the state Finder's Fee Law - restricting a mortgage broker's ability to charge a fee on subsequent loans on the same property within a 24-month period - was not pre-empted by the Federal Depository Institutions Deregulation and Monetary Control Act.

Baltimore Ravens former majority owner Art Modell has successfully deflected a lawsuit by the family of a former business advisor who sought to collect an estimated $30 million finder's fee upon Modell's sale of the team to Stephen Bisciotti. A trust created by the sons of Vincent Andrews has no interest in the agreement their father signed with Modell in 1963, U.S. District Judge Catherine C. Blake ruled Friday.
SAN BERNARDINO - The City Attorney's Office is looking into allegations by a former official that 4th Ward Councilman Fred Shorett offered to use his political influence to broker a business contract with the city. Jason Desjardins, who in February resigned his 2nd Ward seat on the City Council amid an alleged conflict of interest involving his tow company and a contract with the city, says Shorett had previously told him he could find a buyer for the company for a finder's fee so that Desjardins could stay on the council.
