It is estimated that 17 percent of all female travelers took leisure trips without their families last year, and Adventure Business Consultants puts the number of women who signed up for adventure-travel bookings on their own or with other women at about 25 percent. This clearly looks and sounds like a trend, and whenever there's a trend in the travel industry, somebody's going to step and fill the niche right quick. Do an Internet search and you'll find names like Adventurous Wench, Adventures in Good Company and the Women's Wilderness Institute, all devoted to giving women travel options that didn't readily exist a generation ago.

Without knowing anything about the neighbors, I can assume that something happened in their lives to disengage them from each other. Like many neighborhoods, homes are filled with diverse people juggling their own issues - busy moms with growing children, single parents with two or more jobs, and retirees and homebound seniors with physical and emotional problems. But even if we don't speak to our nearby neighbors, don't we at least want to know who's there, or who's supposed to be there?
