Hazel Dell residents should be proud. Their long-awaited 20-acre park with ball fields and other recreational facilities is one step closer to reality. On Tuesday, Clark County commissioners awarded a $5.4 million contract to Thompson Bros. Work will begin this month at the site on Northeast 78th Street just west of St. Johns Road and east of Kings Way Christian Schools.
Friends and family of the late Luke Jensen should be proud, too. Last month, the Vancouver-Clark Parks and Recreation Advisory Committee recommended naming the complex Luke Jensen Sports Park. The final decision will be made by county commissioners, but theres no indication the advisory committees recommendation will not be upheld. We cant think of a more fitting tribute to the 9-year-old who died last year after a two-...

O'Fallon officials are considering bids submitted by five area law firms that each want to represent the city in legal matters.
Staff members will make a recommendation to Mayor Bill Hennessy, who then will either take that recommendation or make his own recommendation to the eight-member City Council for their approval, said city Director of Public Relations Tom Drabelle. A date for when a final decision will be made has not been established, Drabelle said.

Derek Roy should be ready for Friday's game against Toronto. It's looking better for Ryan Miller. Mike Weber stays in the lineup. Craig Rivet stays in the press box. There's your capsule summary of Thursday's practice in HSBC Arena.
Jhonas Enroth, who was up on emergency recall, went back to Portland and Miller got through a full practice and looked better than he has at any point this week. ALHAMBRA - To avoid layoffs and make the budget leaner city officials considered moving seven full-time and two-and-a-half part- time employees to the utilities department at a budget meeting Tuesday.

Within the next two months, a final decision will be made in Texas that could very well affect the way social studies is taught to most American students.
This past week, a divided Texas Board of Education debated what should be included in Texas social studies textbooks. Because of the size of the Texas public school system, much of what is included in those textbooks likely will be included in social studies texts throughout the country. The textbooks have a shelf life of roughly 10 years, so if your child is a first-grader today, what he or she will learn over the next decade may well be what Texas Board will vote on in May.
