Kelly Conheeney almost didn't play in her final high school soccer game. If not for a fateful decision the morning of that game, the Ridgewood midfielder might not be playing in any more games.
As part of a plan to foster team bonding and make the rest of the school aware the team had a State tournament game, Conheeney had brought the team's practice pinneys home for a much-needed washing. The team was going to wear them over their clothes in school to draw some attention during the day. When Conheeney loaded the gear into her family's Chevy Suburban, she stayed in the backseat. On the way to school, the truck was broad-sided, the impact crushing the front passenger's seat when Conheeney normally would have been.

Mike Tucker, the University of Dayton women's soccer coach, is glad to be hosting the Atlantic 10 tournament, but he's found home- field advantage isn't all it's cracked up to be.
The Flyers have had the event in their backyard three other times, but they lost on penalty kicks in the final to Xavier in 1998, dropped a 1-0 decision in the semifinals to Richmond in 2002 and fell in the finals in overtime to Saint Louis in 2005.

Now that the Salt Lake County Council, on a 5-4 vote, has voted to support Mayor Peter Corroon's plan to give a soccer team $55 million in subsidies, it's back to the negotiating table to hammer out the remaining details. The final version will come back to the council for its approval.
At this point, it's difficult to foresee any reason that the deal would unravel. Still, Salt Lake County residents deserve a detailed accounting of how the agreement will work. The council should set aside ample time for public inspection of the final agreement as well as accept public comment before making its final decision.

This study analyzes reasons for the successful of the Oakland Athletics in Major League Baseball as described in the bestseller, Moneyball. Benchmarking analysis is conducted to quantify the extent of Oakland's achievement. The use of player performance analysis to develop a knowledge-based "David" strategy is investigated. The difficulties of applying the Moneyball approach in more complex invasion team sports are discussed. A hierarchical structural model of an invasion game is proposed as a conceptual framework and its application illustrated using data from English Premiership soccer. The technological, conceptual, and cultural barriers to the transferability of the Moneyball approach to other sports are assessed.
