The state Department of Labor and the New York State Sheriffs' Association plan to slam the door shut on unemployment insurance fraud in jails.
Labor Commissioner Colleen C. Gardner announced Tuesday that the sheriffs' association has started providing all inmate data from 57 county correctional facilities which Labor Department fraud investigators will compare their records to make sure prisoners do not collect benefits while in jail.

The good news is that slowly, but surely, the number of new people filing for unemployment insurance is going down a little.
The bad news is that people are still losing their jobs, and half of those out of work have been without jobs for six months. It's the worst period for employment since the Labor Department started tracking it in the 1940s.
