• Syms Reveals Strategy, Details On Filene's Basement Buyout

SECAUCUS -- Syms Corp. has released the financial details of its $65 million deal to buy the bankrupt Filene's Basement chain. The deal included funds provided by Vornado Realty Trust in return for certain lease agreements on Syms properties, according to a statement released Thursday evening by Syms. Vornado, through a joint venture it partially owns, paid $16.8 million to terminate the venture's lease for the Filene's Basement flagship store in Boston. Vornado also paid $8.2 million based on Syms agreeing to amend its lease on a Manhattan store to increase annual rent payments by a minimum of $1.5 million a year. Syms also said it had assumed the lease on the Filene's Basement store at Vornado's Bergen Town Center in Paramus.

after reports last week the big-box retailer would be shutting its doors here. Syms Corp. and Vornado Realty Trust emerged on Monday as the bankrupt retailer's new owners after last week's contested auction. That development plus appeals from city officials last week essentially gave a new lease on life to the Baltimore Filene's, according to Kirby Fowler, head of the Downtown Partnership of Baltimore.

• Filene's Basement Stores Closing Soon ; Paramus, Elizabeth On List of Six

The Filene's Basement stores in Paramus and Elizabeth are expected to close in about a week, casualties of the company's bankruptcy. K&G Acquisition Corp., an affiliate of Men's Wearhouse, won a bankruptcy auction to buy the Filene's Basement chain for $67 million this past weekend. While K&G plans to keep operating most of the chain's stores under the Filene's name, the Paramus store at Bergen Town Center and the Jersey Gardens store in Elizabeth are two of six that will close. The closings of the two New Jersey stores will eliminate 94 jobs. The Paramus store has 38 workers and the Jersey Gardens store has 56, according to a spokesman for the restructuring company.

• Filene's Basement Opens Fourth Local Store at Snowden Square in Columbia

Filene's Basement officially opens its fourth Central Maryland store Wednesday at the Snowden Square Shopping Center in Columbia. The 46,000-square-foot store is the third the Massachusetts discount retailer has opened in the area in the last three years. It opened stores at the Inner Harbor this year, in Cockeysville in 2005 and in Towson in 2004.
