DAYTON -- Becoming a police officer "was not part of my life plan," said Richard Biehl, the recently hired 16th chief of the Dayton Police Department. In the 1970s, working as a salesman at a Shillito's department store in Cincinnati's Western Hills neighborhood, Biehl helped catch a shoplifter.
It may be the smallest city in the state, but Derby has big city problems in some areas and Mayor Tony Staffieri wants to fix it through seeking federal recognition as a WEED and SEED site. Responding to the increasing number of people wanting to assist law enforcement officials and build a stronger partnership in the fight against crime, Sheriff Steve Allendorf has announced that Jo Daviess County citizens are being invited to become Associate Members of the Illinois Sheriffs' Association. Membership appeals go out in the mail shortly. Individuals choosing to join the voluntary program can do so for as little as $20, while businesses can show their support for a $50 contribution. The funding provides critically important technical resources, training, and legislative support on key criminal justice issues. Contributions are tax-deductible.
