Union Fidelity Life Insurance Company mass markets a complete line of life, health and accident insurance policies. Thousands of policyholders have access to a toll-free number for customer service. Union selected the standalone SL-1 ACD-D automatic call distributor system from Northern Telecom Inc. to handle the calls. Over 19,000 incoming customer calls are handled effectively each week. The system is able to monitor, record and report every part of the company's customer service program. Employee performance reports are also generated by the system. The average cost of a single call has been reduced from $2.23 to $1.85.

Farmingdale-based Telephonics Corp. announced Wednesday it is opening a new engineering facility in Huntsville, Ala. - its first location off Long Island. The facility, located in Cummings Research Park, will house engineers from the company's radar systems and communications and electronic systems divisions, as well as from subsidiary Systems Engineering Group. The Alabama location will primarily provide air and missile defense threat systems analysis and engineering; high fidelity modeling and simulation; and missile, radar and combat systems engineering design and performance analysis. Other work will include systems integration for communication and sensors for military application and platforms.
Bruce Lasko does not believe the hype around automatically enrolling employees in a 401(k) plan.
