  • NEW YORK - Jerry Bock, who composed the music to some of the most memorable shows in Broadway history, including the melodies for "Fiorello!" and "Fiddler on the Roof," has died. He was 81. Richard M. Ticktin, Bock's attorney and family friend, said the composer died Wednesday morning at Northern Westchester Hospital in Mount Kisco, N.Y., of heart failure.

  • Jim Critchfield and Allison Cahill, as Tevye and Goldie, strongly lead an impressive cast of local theater professionals and theater students, with notable turns by Christine Laitta as Yente, Jon Cannard as Lazar, and all the various daughters and their suitors. And I gladly make special mention of the "bottle dancers" - it's a shameless bit of [Jerome Robbins] choreography, but when the results are this entertaining, there's really no option but to acknowledge it. And a shout out to the technical side as well: Cory Pattack, Kim Brown and Alfred Kirschman for lights, costumes and set, respectively. For me, that describes almost all Rodgers & Hammerstein, most 1950s and "60s musicals and, specific to this review, , from 1964. It's not that Fiddler isn't a good show...

  • A Fiddler on the roof! Sounds crazy, no? But every one of us is a Fiddler on the Roof, trying to scratch out a meager tune, without breaking his neck. It isn't easy. --Tevye

  • When the Chaffey High theater department opens its show of "Fiddler on the Roof" next week, students might do a double-take at some of the actors on stage. Chances are they might find a teacher or counselor up there filling-in roles in the high school's production.

  • For Jubel Obien, directing and producing "Fiddler on the Roof" is almost like cruising. As vocal director for the 16-ship Holland America Cruise Lines, Obien is in her element - on the go, working with energetic and talented people to put on a top-quality show.

  • BUCKFIELD - Selling elementary and high school students on staging "Fiddler on the Roof" was tough, music director Ethan Wright said, but once they understood the story and learned about Jewish traditions, they got into it. It is my favorite musical of all time," Wright said. "There is a lot of dancing and we had a choreographer work with the 15 boys in the play.
