SAN BERNARDINO - Talk about fictitious. A widely circulated letter from an outfit calling itself the San Bernardino-Riverside FBN Violators Office is telling business owners their fictitious business names are expired and they need to send in more than $400 for a renewal.

Using a fictitious name does not violate a state statute prohibiting identity theft, Maryland's highest court has ruled in reversing a conviction. The defendant used false identifications which contained two fictitious identities to try to open bank accounts. He was charged with two counts of assuming the identity of another under a state statute. A police officer's investigation identified no actual people with the two names the defendant used.
