Three decades ago, following years of owning and replacing one British Triumph roadster after another, I gave up on Mother England and purchased a used Fiat 124 Spider.
As a fanboy of British-built Austins, Jaguars, MGs and especially Triumphs, I had been unswervingly loyal to the Union Jack. But I'd gotten tired of constant mechanical and electrical problems and convertible tops that were about as effective as a balloon made of gauze.

O n Oct. 11, after Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid had taken extraordinary measures to stall an embarrassing vote as long as possible, the Senate decisively rejected President Obama's "jobs" plan. The same day, in Pittsburgh, Mr. Obama explained to his union allies that he would move forward regardless. "We're not gonna wait for Congress," Mr. Obama explained. "We can act administratively without additional congressional authorization and just get it done." Now we know that part of what he meant was yet another mortgage bailout - one that will cost bond investors billions - via subsidized refinancing. This remarkable disregard for the rule of law and proper constitutional procedures fit a familiar pattern in this administration: What it cannot achieve legislatively it will attempt to ...

MILAN (Reuters) - A plan by Fiat Spa to convert preference and savings shares into ordinary shares will reduce the cost of equity and remove a potential hurdle to a merger with Chrysler, which is now majority owned by the Italian carmaker.
Fiat and its sister company Fiat Industrial said late on Thursday [Oct. 27] the proposed conversion would streamline the capital structure and simplify governance for both groups. Analysts said the plan was moderately earnings-enhancing as it would reduce the total number of issued shares and eliminate the cost of higher dividends for holders of savings and preference shares.
