CANNES, France -- The Cannes Film Festival isn't all about movies. In the wee hours of Saturday morning, the focus shifted to music as Duran Duran stole the spotlight for a good cause. The band took time out from touring and promoting their latest album, "All You Need is Now," to rock onstage at a party partly sponsored by the (RED) organization to bring awareness to the HIV/AIDS epidemic. We feel that we help out wherever we can," lead singer Simon LeBon said. "The (RED) organization is a very fine organization indeed. ... It seemed like a good thing for us to do.
PARIS - Pedro Almodovar's story of a plastic surgeon bent on exacting vigilante justice and Terrence Malick's period piece about three Midwestern brothers, starring Brad Pitt, are among 19 movies vying for the top prize at this year's Cannes Film Festival. The lineup announced Thursday for the 64th edition of the festival is exceptionally strong, with much-anticipated new films by the creme de la creme of auteur filmmakers.
The new e-mail message on Valerie Plame Wilson's BlackBerry was from Australian megastar Naomi Watts. Watts (Mulholland Drive, 2001; The Ring, 2002; and 21 Grams, 2003) plays the former covert CIA agent in an upcoming film version of Plame Wilson's memoir, Fair Game. Apparently the actress was just checking in on Plame Wilson's preparations for the film's May 20 premiere at the Cannes Film Festival.
It seems that the French prefer a little Franklin County moonshine with their cheese.

PARIS - Robert De Niro will head the jury at this year's Cannes Film Festival. The veteran American actor and director will lead a nine-member jury for the May 11-22 festival on the French Riviera.
I couldn't decide: Was I waiting for Cary Grant, the cat burglar in "To Catch a Thief," to slip into my elegant room at the Carlton in Cannes, or had I stepped into a Matisse painting of a window overlooking the Mediterranean, with small white sails dotting the lush blue sea? Not a bad question to ponder. The InterContinental Carlton Cannes is one of the grandes dames of the French Riviera. It was built between 1909 and 1913 by architect Charles Dalmas with two distinctive domes on the front corners of the roof designed to resemble the breasts of Carolina Otero, a famous Spanish-born dancer, actress and courtesan.
