HARTFORD -- Plans to close motor vehicle offices and end state- run ferries won't go through, now that an agreement has been reached with state workers, but the process to raise fare increases for Metro-North riders will proceed.

Arthur Imperatore Sr. believes a $9 million deal to provide ferry service between Manhattan, Queens and Brooklyn could signal a rebound of sorts for his troubled company, NY Waterway.
For years, as Imperatore and his son, Arthur Jr., steered the company through financial troubles, lagging ridership and rising fuel and other costs, the senior Imperatore argued that ferry services should get what most other forms of mass transportation get -- government subsidies.

People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals sent a letter to Gov. Dannel P. Malloy Wednesday, offering to help save the Chester- Hadlyme and Glastonbury-Rocky Hill ferries. In the letter, PETA suggests the state Department of Transportation sell advertising space on the ferries to keep them afloat. Unlike the uncertain legal status accorded such agreements in Ireland, they are fully enforceable under federal statute in US federal courts. Irish labor dispute legislation sorely needs revision, particularly in the area of enforcement. More importantly, c...

I am writing as a businesswoman to urge support for the Connecticut River Ferry Service at both Rocky Hill-Glastonbury and Chester-Hadlyme. These ferries are part of the state's transportation network and contribute significantly to the overall flow of traffic in the region.
This is especially true given the unreliability of the East Haddam swing bridge, severe traffic congestion on Interstate 95 and the recent start of disruptive repair work on the Arrigoni Bridge in Middletown.
