According to an Oct. 29 analysis by Hans Kristensen posted on the Federation of American Scientists' Strategic Security Blog, the United States still deploys 10 to 20 B61 free-fall nuclear bombs at Biichel Air Force Base in western Germany. According to a knowledgeable source, the compromise formula in the government program in the end had to be agreed at the highest level, by party leaders Chancellor Angela Merkel of the CDU and incoming Foreign Minister Guido Westerwelle of the FDP.

[...] he signed several executive orders that set out new guidelines for a clear and open government, including one that requires the president to seek advice from the solicitor general about the classification of documents. [...] there is a 50 percent total overclassification rate, according to former Deputy Under Secretary of Defense for Counterintelligence and Security Carol A. So important was an April 30 hearing before the Senate Judiciary Subcommittee on the Constitution that it should have been on front pages around the country. Immediately following [James Tegnelia]'s remark, he filed suit against the Defense Department on behalf of two downwinders and members of the Western Shoshone tribe, citing the potential for radioactive, biological and chemical contamination. The lawsuit also says that the test site still belongs to the Shoshones, and that the blast would continue the desecration of tribal lands that Hager says have been used for decades as the government's weapon "playground.
The Pentagon's line zigzags on whether the test is nuclear-oriented or not. In 2002 and 2006, Pentagon budgets included experiments "to simulate a low-yield nuclear weapon" as part of its drive to create battlefield mininukes, in spite of the fact that the Compr...

Following his unfortunate remarks, Dr. [James Watson] told an audience in London that he regretted what he had said. "To all those who have drawn the inference from my words that Africa, as a continent, is somehow genetically inferior, I can only apologize unreservedly," he said. "That is not what I meant. More importantly, there is no scientific basis for such a belief.
As if taking a cue from the title of his recent book, "Avoid Boring People: Lessons from a Life of Science," Dr. Watson has caused quite a stir among his colleagues, and many have voiced their resentment to his remarks. One group of Nobel laureates-The Federation of American Scientists-which was founded by the Manhattan Project of atomic physicists, said it was "outraged by the noxious comments."

Bloggers scavenging the Internet in July for scandals about Supreme Court nominee John G. Roberts Jr. thought they had red meat. On July 20, Secrecy News, a Web publication of the Federation of American Scientists' Project on Government Secrecy, reported that Judge Roberts was involved in the Iran-Contra affair.
New Media had bested Old Media again. Secrecy News uncovered chinks in Mr. Roberts's armor that NBC, ABC, CBS, the New York Times and The Washington Post had missed.
