Judy Rodd, executive director of Friends of Blackwater Canyon, is supporting the creation of the proposed High Allegheny National Park and Preserve. The preserve would be created from lands in the northern part of the Monongahela National Forest, which is already federal land, as well as state parks, including Blackwater Falls and Canaan Valley.

SANDY RIVER PLANTATION -- Franklin County's Register of Deeds recently recorded a historic transfer of ownership of a 100-foot corridor on the Old Hudson Road near Eddy Pond, giving snowmobiles and ATVs access to connect with other maintained trails in the state. The Dec. 30 transfer from the federal government to the Maine Bureau of Parks and Lands was the result of national, state, regional and local interests all giving a little of something they owned to gain long-term recreation and conservation efforts for future generations. More than a half-century of debate and dispute had to be put aside to make it happen.
According to a survey by the National Association of State Park Directors, up to 400 state parks could be closed this year. States that purchased parks with matching federal funds from the Land and Water Conservation Act may run afoul of Section 6(f) protections which require states to keep parks and recreation areas open in perpetuity.
Although it may seem counterintuitive, green space within and around cities provides social, economic, and environmental advantages. For hundreds of years, neighborhood parks have co-existed with urban areas. Parks are green spaces where people gather, and although not measurable in easily quantifiable terms, they are necessary for creating a sense of community. Greenways are linear parks or corridors of protected or managed lands generally following natural features (such as the Mississippi and Wolf rivers in Shelby County), utility rights-of-way, or transportation routes. Among the cats to be herded in the Camp Bonneville cleanup project are the U.S. Army, the federal Environmental Protection Agency, the state Department of Ecology and parks, environmental and legal officials with Clark County. Good luck getting that multi- jurisdictional bunch moving in the same direction. But county officials have not given up on trying to turn the 3,840-acre former artillery range into a park, and we say good for them. Such a conversion makes perfect sense, and the complexity of the challenge only seems to make county folks more determined.
