  • Currently, requesters appeal any denials or disputes to the agency in question, with no further remedy except taking the matter to a federal court - a time-consuming, costly and legally intricate process for the average citizen-requester. While it's daunting enough to submit oneself to the process of requesting records from an agency - the formalized letter, the inevitable delay that flies in the face of the statute's limitations, the impossible difficulty in following up on the request - when a request is denied, and when that same agency denies an appeal on its own decision (which is often the case), the requester can be stuck.

  • If you are reading this you are different than most of your fellow citizens: you care enough about politics to read on the subject. Regrettably, those who pay the most attention to electoral politics are also exposed to the most misinformation, resulting in the troubling reality that even those most informed about our government are largely ill-informed. If you watch or listen to coverage about the upcoming federal election you will see much air-time and column-space spent on the question of how the application of different campaign strategies will affect the outcome in the race to see who controls the House of Representatives. Expert pundits, power brokers, and political scientists with crystal balls (I'm not channeling Jon Stewart; see centerforpolitics.org/crystalball) will be marsha...

  • On June 22, 2011, the National Labor Relations Board (the Board) issued a Notice of Proposed Rulemaking proposing various amendments of its rules and regulations governing the filing and processing of petitions relating to the representation of employees for purposes of collective bargaining with their employer. This document explains which of the proposed amendments the Board is adopting at this time in the final rule and sets forth the Board's responses to comments concerning those proposals. The Board believes that the final rule will reduce unnecessary litigation in representation cases and thereby enable the Board to better fulfill its duty to expeditiously resolve questions concerning representation. The final rule will also save time and resources for the parties and the agency. ...

  • Three years after audits uncovered possible embezzlement and misspent clinic funds at East Jefferson Community Health Center, federal authorities are investigating the clinic's management during the time in question. State and independent auditors have uncovered missing clinic funds, payments to vendors for services not performed and board members paying for plane tickets on the company tab back in 2004.

  • [Marion Barry], 70, completed his fourth term as mayor in early 1999. While Barry has said he's unsure how much money he earned during the time period in question, he did not challenge claims by federal prosecutors that his income topped $534,000 during the five-year period. Several times since 1991, Barry has sought treatment or counseling for problems with prescription medications or other substances. But Barry said that 90 to 95 percent of the people in his position sometimes fall off the wagon.

  • WASHINGTON - Fueled by government stimulus, the economy grew last quarter for the first time in more than a year. The question now is, can the recovery last? Federal support for spending on cars and homes drove the economy up 3.5 percent from July through September. But the government aid - from tax credits for home buyers to rebates for auto purchases - is only temporary. Consumer spending, which normally drives recoveries, is likely to weaken without it.

  • Lawyers for a group of sex offenders challenging restrictions on their Halloween-related activities are asking a federal judge to certify a question of law directly to the Missouri Supreme Court. It's the first time such a procedure has been tried in almost 20 years. The plaintiffs filed their lawsuit in U.S. District Court last October, seeking to enjoin enforcement of the law on Oct. 31. Led by Anthony E. Rothert, of the American Civil Liberties Union of Eastern Missouri, the plaintiffs alleged violations of their federal and state constitutional rights.
