  • NEW ORLEANS - The FBI is reviewing a white supremacist Web site that purports to list the addresses of five of the six black teenagers accused of beating a white student in Jena and "essentially called for their lynching," an agency spokeswoman said Saturday. Sheila Thorne, an agent in the FBI's New Orleans office, said authorities were reviewing whether the site breaks any federal laws. She said the FBI had "gathered intelligence on the matter," but declined to further explain how the agency got involved.

  • Four years ago, in his National Energy Policy, Vice President Dick Cheney recommended building 1,300 to 1,900 new power plants, 38,000 miles of new gas pipelines, and 255,000 miles of transmission lines. Then last month, in a speech before the National Small Business Association, President Bush added a few more energy priorities to that list. He'd like to build new nuclear power plants and change existing laws to "reduce uncertainty" in the nuclear licensing process. Bush also proposed constructing the nation's first new oil refineries since 1976 -- suggesting they be built on military bases slated for closure -- as well as simplifying the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's rules for permitting refineries. In his budget request to Congress, he asked for $6.7 billion in tax breaks fo...

  • As a director at Mercadien PC, a Princeton CPA firm, [Linda Soley] works with manufacturers, wholesalers, distributors and others to identify tax deductions and credits that can reduce payments that companies make to state and federal governments. Deductions reduce the amount of income subject to tax, and credits reduce payments on a dollar-for-dollar basis-each $1 of credit knocks $1 off the amount to be paid. Businesses in an Urban Enterprise Zone [UEZ], as defined by the state, may be eligible for an investment tax credit and other tax credits. Soley, who holds a bachelor's degree from Rider University and joined Mercadien in 1988, spoke with NJBIZ Staff Writer Martin C Daks about how to keep abreast of changes in the tax laws and why some companies may miss out on claiming valuable...

  • After a series of meetings with employees from five different restaurants, the Madison workers decided they wanted to take action. "They felt there was discrimination in both the way they were fired and the way they'd been treated on the job," [Patrick Hickey] says. Nineteen out of the 28 fired workers in Madison have filed complaints with the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, alleging that they received disparate assignments and treatment while working at Taco Bell. "There are certain expectations from Latinos - they wouldn't get as many breaks, and were expected to do harder work or more work," Hickey says. He also cites discriminatory English -only policies and fewer opportunities for training. The WRC launched a campaign to draw attention to the issue, holding demonstrations ...
