  • Editor, the Tribune: On Jan. 22, 1973, the Supreme Court struck down all existing state laws protecting unborn children and created the right to abortion on demand for the full nine months of pregnancy. Since the notorious Roe v. Wade and Doe v. Bolton decisions, almost 50 million unborn children have been aborted. On this 36th anniversary of those decisions, an interesting irony is developing. On the one hand, leaders in Congress, with the support of Barack Obama, plan to pass the Freedom of Choice Act. FOCA would nullify virtually every state and federal law that in any way limits access to abortion, including parental notification laws, the ban on partial-birth abortion and laws that prevent taxpayer- funded abortions.

"We get a steady stream of patients from across the border. They tend to be younger women and the poor, although a lot of the poorest women can't even make the trip because of the associated costs." After pausing a moment, he adds, "I don't think anyone really knows what happens to them. "Some states, like California and New York and others will become abortion destinations, which isn't a problem in and of itself. But some women won't be able to make those trips," [Janet Crepps] says. "The people who can afford to make those trips will get the health care t...

  • A dozen nurses in New Jersey have rekindled the contentious debate over when health-care workers can refuse to play a role in caring for women getting abortions. In a lawsuit filed in federal court Oct. 31, 12 nurses charge that the University of Medicine & Dentistry of New Jersey violated state and federal laws by abruptly announcing in September that nurses would have to help with abortion patients before and after the procedure, reversing a long-standing policy exempting employees who refuse based on religious or moral objections.

  • Ethics complaints dismissed over union-rights legislation MADISON, Wis. -- The Wisconsin state ethics board said Wednesday it dismissed all ethics complaints against lawmakers that arose from the dispute over Republican Gov. Scott Walker's divisive anti-union bill, including a complaint against Walker after he was recorded saying he and his staff considered planting political agitators among demonstrators protesting the bill. The Government Accountability Board said in a statement that it reviewed all of the hundreds of complaints filed against Democratic and Republican lawmakers, and decided unanimously to dismiss them all, finding that most concerned the use of political tactics that fell outside of the scope of state ethics laws. "While the complaints characterized various actions of...
