In a recent interview, Swanson discussed his career, the Federal Home Loan Bank system, and his vision for the bank. Swanson said he began his professional career as a lawyer but he is really a community banker. He comes to the Federal Home Loan Bank of Des Moines with the experience of having been a banker and having led a community bank that was a very strong partner of the Federal Home Loan Bank. Some of the issues addressed during the 2005 North American Agricultural Lenders Conference last month in Omaha, were competition, rural development, changing family farm structure, volatile commodities, and structuring credit and risks on loans in the best interest of the bank. Michael Boehlje of Purdue University discussed the changing family farm and who will finance agriculture in the future. Helping community banks capitalize on rural America and small-town living was the focus of a presentation by Tony Fahrenkrog of the Federal Home Loan Bank of Des Moines and Daniel Hess of the Federal Home Loan Bank of Topeka.
