BOSTON, Dec. 23, 2010 /PRNewswire/ -- The Federal Home Loan Bank of Boston announced that five Connecticut initiatives will receive more than $8.8 million in grants, loans, and interest-rate subsidies through its Affordable Housing Program. These funds will be used to finance 157 units of affordable rental and ownership housing for households earning at or below 80 percent of area median income.
The need for safe, decent affordable housing remains critical in these challenging times," said Edward A. Hjerpe III, the Bank's president and CEO. "Beyond increasing the supply of housing, these funds will help create jobs and stimulate economic development in Connecticut.

A few weeks ago, Kennebunk Savings Bank lent $45 million in idle funds overnight to the Federal Home Loan Bank of Boston, which advances credit to New England financial institutions. Kennebunk Savings earned a half-percent or so on the transaction.

Affordable housing projects being developed in Stratford and Bridgeport by Habitat for Humanity of Greater Bridgeport are getting a $160,000 grant from the Federal Home Loan Bank of Boston. The money will be used for land acquisition and construction costs associated with building 20 homes in the two communities, said Michael Jessee, president and chief executive officer of the Federal Home Loan Bank. The Stratford homes will be built on vacant property that had been a housing project while the Bridgeport homes will be built on land donated by the city.
