House Majority Leader Tom DeLay implemented the infamous "K Street Project," which compiled lists from Federal Election Commission databases of political contributions made by the political action committees of America's largest trade associations. While much research on political fundraising is based on data from the Federal Election Commission that detail contributions to candidates, political parties, and political action groups, this study examines the other side of the coin-what do presidents do in search of political funds, and how does this relate to other presidential activities? The author systematically analyzes the frequency and geography of presidential fundraising travel from 1977 to 2004 in order to determine which factors are related to where presidents go to raise funds from their supporters, how fundraising travel relates to geographic patterns of other presidential activity, and the evolution of these dynamics over time. Sen. Joe Manchin, D-W.Va., has already raised $1,044,999 for his 2012 re-election campaign, according to his latest filings with the Federal Election Commission, which include contributions made by June 30.
Manchin raised $448,501 from individual contributors: $151,843 between Jan. 1 and March 31, and $296,658 between April 1 and June 30.

NEW YORK - Stephen Colbert's latest attempt at campaign mischief- making involves encouraging Iowans to write in a false name during the weekend's presidential straw poll, but one television station in Des Moines isn't playing along.
Colbert, who formed a "super PAC" this year and won approval from the Federal Election Commission to begin taking contributions, is encouraging Iowans to vote for "Rick Parry" during today's test vote for -Republican candidates.

Arizona Democrats, citing what they call suspicious campaign contributions, filed a complaint with the Federal Election Commission on Jan. 23 against a leadership political action committee associated with Republican Congressman John Shadegg.
The complaint alleges Shadegg's PAC violated campaign finance law by handing over donations to Shadegg's campaign account in coordination with donors who had already contributed the maximum, state Democrats said.
