The Oklahoma Arts Council is facing significant state and federal budget cuts, news that is tough to handle at a time when the organization has been making inroads with arts programs in newer areas like gang prevention and alternative education.
The council will receive a 9-percent state budget cut for fiscal year 2012, dropping its appropriation to a little more than $4 million, said Suzanne Tate, executive director. Since 2009, the organization has weathered a 22-percent drop from all sources, which makes it harder to carry out its breadth of services, she said.
