West Virginia's economy could take a hit if the so-called super committee formed by Congress can't agree on a debt reduction plan and the federal budget gets slashed. The budget deal reached by Congress earlier this month included about $917 billion in spending reductions and created a super committee to find additional cuts. If the committee doesn't come up with at least $1.2 trillion in additional savings by Nov. 23 or Congress doesn't adopt its proposals by Dec. 23, a provision will kick in to make automatic cuts.

Complex tax law changes in 1997 have largely made the 1998 tax filing season a challenging one for taxpayers and accountants. In his testimony before the House Committee on Ways and Means, Subcommittee on Oversight, on Mar 31, 1998, Roger Harris, Vice Chair of the National Society of Accountants' Federal Taxation Committee, avers, however, that the efficient filing season can be attributed to the IRS' successful efforts to enhance taxpayer service.
