On the night that officially kicks off the Yuletide season in Pittsburgh, fireworks will dance to favorite Christmas songs like "Let It Snow" and "Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer. The 51st Duquesne Light Light Up Night -- held on Nov. 18 with festivities throughout the Golden Triangle -- culminates with a fireworks show that Zambelli Internationale choreographed and produced. The Pittsburgh Brewing Company 150th Anniversary Fireworks Celebration, sponsored by the area's oldest brewery, will give festive spectators an exciting treat, officials say.
I admit it, I'm a cornball. Whole kernel corn, in fact. One of my favorite Christmas songs is "Grown-Up Christmas List," with music by David Foster and lyrics by Linda Thompson-Jenner. You know the one:

WISN-AM (1130) talker Mark Belling is taking a short break from talk radio to deejay an hour of his favorite Christmas songs at 1 this afternoon on Clear Channel sister station WRIT-FM (95.7). It's not as odd as it may sound. Regular listeners to Belling's 3 to 6 p.m. show know that Christmas bumper music is something he takes pretty seriously.
ONE of my favorite Christmas songs was written by bad-boy country musician Steve Earle. He starts with the familiar story of the wise men's journey, with a twist, making them amazed to find that "The miracle they prized was nothing but a child." But it's the refrain that gets me every time: Nothing but a child could wipe those tears away
Every year, I make a new mix of Christmas songs and title it "My Favorite Christmas Songs." After the holidays, I have a whole year in which to decide what my new favorite Christmas songs are, and in what order I should place them. New additions this year include "Holly Jolly Christmas" and "Mary's Boy Child," but Bing Crosby's "White Christmas" and Karen Carpenter's "Merry Christmas, Darling" are still on there. And in a prime position is one of my all-time favorite Christmas songs, one that gives me that warm and fuzzy Christmas feeling: "The Christmas Song. Every Thanksgiving, when I make my mix, I wonder all over again what makes Christmas "the most wonderful time of the year." As the days get shorter and more stressful, I find myself joining the millions of people worldwide who lo...
Sixth in a series on "ity" words Fidelity is "the quality of being faithful; faithfulness, loyalty, unswerving allegiance to a person or party." Our fidelity is our word of honor, our pledge, our oath. It is "strict conformity to truth or a fact; honesty, truthfulness, trustworthiness." Fidelity comes from the root word that means to trust or to have faith. One of my favorite Christmas songs is "Adeste Fidelis," literally meaning "o come all ye faithful.
The Jingle Bell Ball returned for its 22nd year of holiday dances for children and young adults. The parties, held Dec. 5 at the Gibson Guitar Factory, included the Children's Cookie Party for toddlers through second grade, Jingle Bell Rock for third- and fourth-graders, Mistletoe Mash for fifth- and sixth-graders and The Holiday Dance for seventh- and eighth-graders. Guests who wanted to rock around the Christmas tree requested their favorite songs at The Holiday Dance. Cage Carruthers was head deejay, Robert Heard was co-deejay, and Josh Driver was assistant deejay.
Travis Blank was at his Highland apartment recording a collection of his father's favorite songs as a Christmas gift when his mother called and asked him to come to the house. Three-month-old Logan Gheen will not remember his grandfather, Ronald Blank. Logan will have to learn about the successful naval commander, dentist and professor through stories told by relatives and friends of the man who was so respected that students who did not know him during his teaching days at Loma Linda University were at his side during his last years of life.
