  • Too often we cover events while they're going on, but then don't wrap it all up. Well, I'm going to wrap this year's tennis tournament up like a big ol' present on Christmas morning, delivering you, fine readers and tennis fans, the good, the bad and the ugly of the 2008 Pilot Pen. I'm all about snap decisions. Why think about stuff? That's for losers. These comments are from me and the many, many people I've talked to over the course of the week. So, let's get going. The Good

  • AMES, Iowa - Steele Jantz arrived from California this past winter looking every bit the savior Iowa State was looking for. The 6-foot-3 quarterback with a trendy faux-hawk haircut had tremendous stats for City College of San Francisco last season. He appeared to many to be the favorite to take over for departed senior Austen Arnaud from the moment he signed his letter of intent.

  • Backed by a four-piece band and two background singers, Musiq took the stage in a chic, funky ensenble that illustrated his unique style purple shirt, white ie, gray vest, white jeans, a studded "punk rocker" belt and hightop sneakers. His hair was cut into a "faux-hawk," with the look topped off by his trademark dark shades. While his band played a bluesy intro to the ballad "Teach Me" from his 2007 "Luvanmusiq" album, Musiq went to the side of the stage to switch mics and remedy sound problems that affected the first couple of songs. Once the sound was up to snuff, Musiq returned to serenade his fans with renewed vigor. Before performing his 2000 hit "Love," Musiq engaged in some gospel-style vocalizing. The label "neosoul" very much applies to him, since he's a throwback to classic s...

  • I've been doing hair for about nine years now. Things come in waves, like the shaggy mullet or the very heavy bangs or the faux-hawk for boys. But there's no specific trend now. Hair is just kind of everywhere.

  • Backed by a four-piece band and two background singers, Musiq took the stage in a chic, funky ensemble that illustrated his unique style purple shirt, white tie, gray vest, white jeans, a studded "punk rocker" belt and hightop sneakers. His hair was cut into a "faux-hawk," with the look topped off by his trademark dark shades. Musiq closed the show with recent hit "B.U.D.D.Y.," an upbeat, danceable tune that demonstrates his talent for writing catchy melodies. Musiq is at his best, however, when crooning sensitive ballads that arc a welcome reprieve from much of the misogynistic lyrics that dominate urban music today. At just under 90 minutes, Musiq's set felt a bit too brief. It would have been interesting to hear the gifted entertainer perform a couple of cover versions of funk and so...

  • Some people have skeletons in their closets. I just have a collection of trend hits and misses. When they were good, they were very, very good. When they were bad, well, you get the idea. There were the hand-tooled cowboy boots I wore with my Brownie uniform in first grade (excellent). There was the Billy Ray Cyrus mullet in third grade (atrocious). There were the black wide-leg trousers in junior high (not bad). There were a ton of gauzy embroidered peasant blouses in high school (oh, dear). In college, I went through a faux-hawk phase (I think I pulled it off, but Darling Christopher votes an emphatic "no"). Today, I counted seven black dresses in my closet (and I wear them all).

  • To beard, or not to beard? As grooming trends go, the beard will probably never rival the faux-hawk for sheer faddishness. But for many men, hirsute is newly hip.

  • Advice compiled and condensed from actual sources by Kelly Jane Torrance, who composed the questions. They say to be careful what you wish for, and I've certainly found that to be true. The great success of my movie "Borat" has made it difficult for me to make any other films. You see, I shot to fame because I was so good at playing a character and tricking unsuspecting people into saying embarrassing things. Now that I'm so well known, though, I'm having trouble doing it again as I make my movie "Bruno." As Bruno, a gay Austrian fashion reporter, I recently attended an anti-gay marriage rally - but people soon recognized the real me underneath the faux hawk. How am I supposed to do what I do best now that I'm a victim of my own success?

  • Jenelle Evyn Hutcherson has made history a second time. The 26-year-old Long Beach resident made history in November as the first "out" lesbian to compete in the Miss Long Beach pageant. Hutcherson was a finalist, but didn't win the crown.

...3) Faux-hawk big enough to block girls behind me. 4) iPhon...

  • LA PUENTE - Detectives in La Puente are investigating the second reported sexual assault this month, though the attacks are not related, authorities said Wednesday. The most recent crime took place between 2 a.m. and 4 a.m. Saturday, though it was not reported until Tuesday, Los Angeles County sheriff's Lt. Victor Sotelo said.
