Dont let the fact that Amy Gannon just joined the world of Facebook fool you. She may have been slow to join the social media, but this 34-year-old is pretty worldly wise. And two weeks ago, she started sharing this wisdom on the pages of the Daily Mails Mommyhood blog. At first blush it might seem as though we invited Gannon to join bloggers Katy Brown, Kara Moore, Cara Bailey, Carrie Cherry and Karan Ireland just to get away from all those darn Cs and Ks. But really, Gannon brings the interesting perspective of a young mom who battled breast cancer she just finished her last treatment in August when her son, Henry, now 2, was still an infant. She is a registered dietician whose work focuses on obesity in children. And shes married to George, a former Daily Mail repo...

Traditionally, today Jan. 2 is D-Day, the day that holiday revelers begin dieting to shed those extra pounds put on between Thanksgiving and New Years Day. The McClatchy News Services offers several food columnists who specialize in healthy recipes: one is by home economists who use healthy ingredients; the other is by a dieter who tries to make lighter versions of favorite fattening foods. Although both columns are often published in the Sunday Gazette-Mail, here are a couple of unpublished recipes that might make the new diet regimen a little more appealing.

So far, the star of the athletes' emerging campaign to coax kids to slim down is Shaquille O'Neal, whose primetime reality show on ABC this summer was more real than most. On "Shaq's Big Challenge," the NBA veteran cajoled six children who were way too fat to eat better and exercise regularly to strive for weight loss goals over six months.
The Miami Heat big man knew his coaching alone wouldn't be enough, so he brought in experts as back-ups, including a nutritionist, his personal physician, a medical specialist in childhood obesity and a trainer. Shaq set the kids up in a gym and persuaded parents to lighten.up meals. He hired a chef to prepare a healthful lunch in a middle school cafeteria, inspiring students to petition for a better menu.
The show was a worthy use of star power, tho...

The current philosophy of governance-and this includes governance of the Democrat and Republican variety-is that there is tremendous capacity in government to better the lives of average folks; it is the power of administrative policy, that can end poverty, cure disease and ultimately save the planet. It is, alas, also the promise of happiness written in capital letters that entices "we the people" to grant government ever greater powers with which to work their magic. Can't find any authority in the Constitution for the actions of our government? "Why man, they are engaged in the serious business of saving humanity!

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Bo Ryan heard the accents, tasted the fattening foods and realized how glad he was to be back home in the Philadelphia area.
The sports fans are a bit more fanatical, the greasy cheesesteaks taste great, and his parents are right down the road. No wonder Ryan hopes to stick around through the weekend.

Not everybody is going to be watching the Super Bowl. Not everyone cares about 22 grown men running around, hitting each other and chasing a lopsided ball around a rectangle field. And even many of those who like the athletic camaraderie and competition of football may not be crazy about watching two East Coast teams duke it out.
If you are into the game, the multimillion-dollar commercials and the endless fistfuls of fattening finger foods - hey, have a great game day. But if this isn't your idea of a perfect Sunday, take heart. There's a whole uncrowded world waiting for ready to dive into its end zone.

American parents have stepped in -- through government sanctions - - and stopped tobacco companies from manipulating the impressionable minds of youngsters. They also have stepped in to make sure Hollywood keeps a rating system. Now, it appears, those who pitch empty calories at kids are coming under scrutiny, as well.
With childhood obesity at frightening levels, the Federal Trade Commission is looking into the ways manufacturers of fattening foods pitch their wares to children. According to the Institute of Medicine, American food companies dole out $10 billion to $12 billion each year to catch the eye of America's youngest consumers. Now, at the request of Congress, the FTC is at the point of taking action against 50 food and beverage companies for using cartoon characters as shills,...
