The influences of the fatalism frequently associated with Appalachian culture on adolescent identity processes were explored. The sample consisted of 91 Appalachian adolescents and 87 non-Appalachian adolescents. Participants completed measures of fatalism (operationalized in terms of higher hopelessness and lower optimism/efficacy scores) and Berzonsky's identity styles (information, normative, diffuse-avoidant). Findings indicated an association between fatalism and the diffuse-avoidant identity style. At the same time, Appalachian participants were found to be more fatalistic and to have a higher mean diffuse-avoidant score than the non-Appalachian participants. Analyses also revealed a significant gender difference in identity style. Implications for family and consumer sciences pro...

WASHINGTON During Reconstruction, Mississippi created a "shoestring" congressional district, sweeping so many blacks into a narrow district along the river that other districts had comfortably large white majorities. This was racial gerrymandering deplored by liberals.
Surrounded as I am by baseball fans and Democrats, a certain damp, chilly, autumnal fatalism has settled on my world. Pirates fans, Reds fans, Orioles, Indians, Cubs - we were all Red Sox fans this week. We cheered them in a seven-game playoff series against the Yankees to decide which team would go to the World Series.
ESPN. com recently ran an intriguing college basketball column based on David Foster Wallace's celebrated undergraduate thesis back in the early 1980s titled "Fatalism. The basic premise of the thesis asked the question "What if?"
The lease is set to run out on our rental home in a few months, and our landlord has decided to sell rather than renew. Move No. 3,492 coming up.
While these next two weeks will tell us everything about the chain of command in the American League East, there's no such drama lingering in the National League, where the fatalism runs deep. Who can possibly stop the Phillies from getting back to the World Series, is what the Brewers, Braves and Diamondbacks have to be wondering. All signs point to the Phillies rolling straight through October, and that includes flattening whatever AL team emerges from the first two rounds. The Yankees are still marginal favorites, with the league's No. 1 offense since the All-Star break. Still, while acknowledging the Bombers' numerous assets, one talent evaluator added, "I wouldn't call it the best Yankee team I've seen in the last 10years.
CHINESE TV authorities are trying to quash time travel, you may have read last week. A government guideline discourages plot lines that contain elements of "fantasy, time-travel, random compilations of mythical stories, bizarre plots. fatalism and reincarnation, ambiguous moral lessons and a lack of positive thinking.
The promotion of posthumous work is a time-honored tradition in commercial media. We have seen it from musical artists such as Johnny Cash and Tupac Shakur, and we have seen it likewise from the estates of dozens of prematurely deceased authors, including Ernest Hemingway, F. Scott Fitzgerald and Sylvia Plath. Now, David Foster Wallace gets the posthumous treatment. And why not cash in? Nothing animates the marketing of a novel like an untimely death. Would we care as much about "The Bell Jar" if Plath hadn't met the end she did? If Plath lived to be 60, the book's enduring commercial viability and critical reputation would have been on its merits and not the irresistibly tragic subtext of her life. The "suicide solution" validates the experience for many readers, especially the more ca...
This editorial appears in the Dec. 1, 2011, Yakima Herald- Republic. Outrage tinged with fatalism filled a Yakima hotel meeting room last summer when 300 people -- postal workers, customers and community leaders -- protested a plan to close the local mail- processing facility. Nobody was happy, but many voiced a sense that it was a done deal. The crowd offered more anger than it did solutions.
