[Edward Carlos] says he's aware of "a couple of cases" where users consumed a "substantial dose" of methadone and didn't feel anything. "So 45 minutes later they took benzos or something else and aspirated in their sleep. In terms of absolute numbers, it's not that big of a deal in Philadelphia," [Brad Meier] speculates. "But I do think it's an emerging problem." Even if just 1 percent of take-home bottles are diverted from methadone clinics, "it's still a decent amount," he says. "Look, we run two clinics and I'd like to say it doesn't happen, but it probably does." A source who helps run drug trials in Philadelphia says she receives phone calls "every day" from people who've become addicted to painkillers after they were prescribed by their doctors. "It's really sad," the source say...
Among the fans thirsting to see the movie "Twilight" is Carrie Preston, who plays mortal Arlene Fowler on the HBO vampire drama "True Blood." She has read the novels of "Twilight" creator Stephenie Meyer and the vampire novels of Anne Rice. Of course, she also has read the Charlaine Harris novels, on which "True Blood" is based.
FATAL ATTRACTION: A Greek Tragedy Off-Broadway play at the East 13th Street Theatre, 136 E. 13th St., between Third and Fourth avenues, Manhattan.
HBO's "Mrs. Harris" provokes no new questions about whether Jean Harris intentionally shot her famous lover, physician and best- selling author Herman "Hy" Tarnower. But it will have you asking why the the prim and proper headmistress of the tony Madeira School in McLean remained in the increasingly abusive relationship for nearly 14 years. The made-for-cable film, premiering tomorrow evening at 8, plumbs the couple's dysfunctional love match and, with it, Harris' decaying mental state before killing Dr. Tarnower, author of "The Complete Scarsdale Medical Diet," at his New York estate in 1980.
As fall approaches, bears and squirrels start their pre-winter eating binge. Birds begin to migrate. And at Lake Pueblo State Park, herds of tarantulas cruise roadways and trails. But these monster trucks of the spider world aren't looking for food or shelter. They have left their holes in the ground to look for mates.
Forget the romance of roses, Christian Wingate likes plants with a killer instinct. SARAH GAULT reports, with pictures by TREVOR READ CHRISTIAN WINGATE'S pot plants are bullyboys. They are the green gangsters of household vegetation. Flies should flee and bugs better bolt in the vicinity of his New Plymouth home.
OPENING THIS WEEK (2 CHILES) CHLOE A woman (Julianne Moore) suspects that her husband (Liam Neeson) is cheating, so she hires a young prostitute (Amanda Seyfried) to seduce him. What ensues is a mild variation of Fatal Attraction with a Sapphic twist. This is an artsy, pretentious sexual thriller, directed by Atom Egoyan, that immediately calls to mind those direct-to-video erotic films of the 1990s starring Tanya Roberts, Shannon Tweed, and Andrew Stevens. Moore does what she can with the shallow role assigned her; the rest of the cast mostly makes concerned or crazy faces as they slog through the nonsense. Rated R. 96 minutes. Regal DeVargas, Santa Fe. (Robert Nott)
REDLANDS Too bad Inspector Jacques Clouseau couldn't be a real person. Then again, maybe it's just as well: The world would be safer, thanks to his astute and keen sense of picking up clues from the most mundane circumstances while the rest of the world would be rendered unsafe in his wake, as the residual effects of his investigations cause innocent bystanders to get injured.
