LOS ANGELES, Nov. 18, 2011 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- The U.S. Department of Agriculture has awarded a grant to the Los Angeles Neighborhood Land Trust (LANLT) to expand educational resources and programs related to community gardening and urban farming. This project will continue USDA's efforts to combat malnutrition while supporting local and regional food systems.

WENATCHEE - , 98, passed away in Wenatchee, WA on April 14, 2011. Vyvien was the daughter of F. Percy Sheppard and Angeline (Massie) Sheppard. She was born July 27, 1912, in Seattle, WA and lived in the Ballard area, until her family move to Wapato, WA, where they planted orchards in Parker Heights. She graduated from Wapato High School in 1930. Her first two years of college were spent at Whitman College in Walla Walla. She excelled at women's basketball and pledged Phi Mu Sorority. In 1936, she graduated from the University of Washington with a Bachelor's degree in Physical Education. Vyvien married Sylvester E. Community gardens have numerous benefits to Memphis neighborhoods, including reclaiming vacant lots, providing healthy food, fostering self-sufficiency and creating community gathering places that improve and enrich the quality of life. That's why GrowMemphis has teamed with Memphis Housing and Community Development to grant $5,000 in 2012 to new community garden projects.
In 2011, GrowMemphis funded two projects: Green Leaf Learning Farm at Knowledge Quest in South Memphis, and the Neighborhood School in Bingham ton. William Leroy Bellomy, 90, of Anderson Island, Wash., died Jan. 14 at home. Mr. Bellomy was born in Troy, Idaho, and fought in World War II. He also lived in Kennewick, Yakima and Moses Lake, when he began farming under the Columbia Basin Project.
