'Beginners'
Filmmaker Mike Mills used his own life in finding inspiration for "Beginners," a terrific dramedy that should gain some attention during awards season. Ewan McGregor, Christopher Plummer and Melanie Laurent star in this film that spreads moments of levity and emotion even over a screenplay -- penned by Mills -- that should resonate with just about anybody. The film's quirkiness and lack of solid narrative will turn some folks away, but Mills has succeeded in delivering a beautiful movie specializing in relationships. The inspiration from Mills' life came from his father, who announced, at age 75, that he was gay. In "Beginners," Plummer stars as the father, and the son is portrayed by Ewan McGregor. The story is told from the son's point of view, and he takes on two relation...

THIS year, one of my children entered kindergarten and the other, preschool. My wife returned to work full time. My last grandparent died. My parents entered their 70s. I turned 40. Donald Justice, the poet, writes, "Men at 40 ... are more fathers than sons themselves now." For many, that's true.
The balance varies within families and may shift back and forth. It applies for other relatives, too. Everyone has multiple identities in a family, not to mention in a workplace or a community. Each challenges us to continue learning.

This study examines the relationships of college student employ- ment and its' effect on student life. Approximately 500, 19-24 year old, mid-western university undergraduates participated in an "on-line" survey. Data were analyzed using exploratory fac- tor analyses, reliability and correlations. Study time/student time positively correlated with employment while grade point nega- tively correlated with employment. Attendance and family relationships were not related to employment. "Beyond class"(social interactions) and persistence toward a degree posi- tively correlated with employment while extra-curricular activities and socializing negatively correlated with employment. Employment was not related to study time; however, it was found that students spend less time preparing for clas...

Adolescent aspirations associated with perceptions of "living well" were qualitatively evaluated based on 187 middle school student responses. Using grounded theory methodology, 976 words and phrases were coded and grouped; 41.9% were extrinsic, 36.3% were intrinsic, and 21.8% of the passages were merely descriptive. Extrinsic coded words and phrases emphasized things they would own or purchase; intrinsic coded words emphasized how they would live or who they would become. Extrinsic middle school aspirations were highly status laden, clearly linking expensive and exclusive possessions with self-image and identity. Intrinsic aspirations were characterized by major themes of growth and relatedness emphasizing positive family relationships and the development of skills and personal qualiti...

NEW HAVEN -- War, politics, complicated family relationships are the stuff of many a drama, from the ancient Greek classics to modern theater, the themes resonating still with surprising topicality.

While female sports journalists have made their way onto sports desks and into locker rooms, some say they have not gained acceptance. Many do not feel the rewards of staying in the business compensate for the on-the-job discrimination and the sacrificing of time and family relationships. Here, Hardin and Shain tackle issues facing female sports journalists.
