A national group associated with the Family Policy Council of West Virginia has been named a hate group by a civil rights center.
The Southern Poverty Law Center announced late last month that it would list the Family Research Council and a dozen other organizations as hate groups next year, saying they have spread lies about gay people and engaged in "repeated, groundless name- calling.

It has come to my attention that The Family Policy Council of West Virginia has come out in opposition to the state Board of Education's proposed updated Policy 4373: Expected Behavior in Safe and Supportive Schools, that is currently up for public comment.
According to the group's website, The Family Policy Council of West Virginia is a servant organization that "advocates for policies that embrace the sanctity of human life, enrich marriage, and safeguard religious freedom." Its passion is to advance, defend and equip West Virginia's families. That is certainly an admirable mission that I think most West Virginians wholeheartedly support.

His exit came quietly. No cheering crowds, no signs decrying the evils of homosexuality, no rhetorical bombs likening the two chambers of the Maine Legislature to "Sodom" and "Gomorrah.
Just a press release, quietly posted Tuesday atop the Maine Family Policy Council's Web site, titled "Heath Moves On."

A proposed policy change that protects West Virginia's gay and lesbian students from school harassment has drawn criticism from some conservative groups.
Groups like the Family Policy Council of West Virginia have lambasted the policy for threatening religious freedom and free speech, while civil rights groups say the rule will finally give LGBT students much-needed help.
