The plaintiff, identified only as K.M., worked as a bank teller at First Bank's Four Seasons branch in Chesterfield. He was diagnosed with human immunodeficiency virus in 2006 and took a leave of absence under the Family Medical Leave Act for treatment. K.M. was on leave from June 2006 through Aug. 21, 2006.

In just over a month, Michele Norwood will leave her home and her family, take a leave of absence from her job working the phones at American Medical Response and head south to the Andes for a year to pursue a dream and volunteer to teach college-aged Ecuadorans to speak English. Some of her friends and relatives can't believe she's actually going to live for a year in South America.
Norwood, 26, who has always loved to travel, can hardly wait.

A casino employee suffering complications from pregnancy who was fired after exhausting her medical leave can't sue her employer, the New Jersey Supreme Court has ruled in reversing summary judgment for the plaintiff.
The plaintiff was advised by her physician to request a leave of absence from work soon after she found out she was pregnant. Her employer's policy allowed a total of six months medical leave in a 12-month period, including Family and Medical Leave Act time. Her employer classified the first 12 weeks of her absence as FMLA leave, and the remainder of her time as medical leave pursuant to company policy. When the plaintiff exhausted her six months' leave time, she was terminated.

The plaintiff worked as a security guard at a state correctional facility. His mother was hospitalized with terminal cancer. Towards the end of one work shift, the plaintiff was called to the hospital to confer with his sister about whether to take their mother off life support. The plaintiff's supervisor refused to approve his leaving work after deciding that the plaintiff was needed to work a double shift because of another security guard's absence.
