Justice Acosta has served as a Justice of the Supreme Court in New York County since 2003. Before he was elected to this position, he was designated Acting Supreme Court Justice in May 2001 to preside over the Harlem Community Justice Center, a multi-jurisdictional, "problem-solving" court that handles family law and civil cases. The Missouri Bar's annual meeting and Annual Judicial Conference are under way in Columbia, and a good chunk of the bar's Board of Governors meeting today focused on family law matters.
The group first considered a new legislative proposal that would allow for expansion of the Family Services and Justice Fund. The concept was that courts that don't have a separate family court could decide to establish such a fund and collect a $30 fee for family law cases. The fund then would be used to provide family court-like services to families, such as guardians ad litem. Such funds already exist in circuits with separate family courts.
