When Al Tacker joined the Family Counseling Center in January 1988, the organization was in the red, about to collapse.
But against the advice of many, Tacker took the job, sharing the position of executive director with his wife, Mary Jo Herde. Now 23 years later -- after growing the budget sixfold, employing four times as many employees and adding several branches -- Tacker is retiring.

Dear Abby: My husband and I disagree on something. Do you think parents MUST do the same things for each of their children, even when there is a great discrepancy in the children's behavior and attitude toward their parents?
We have helped out one of our sons who was having financial difficulties. Now the other son, "Sean," expects to receive the same, although he is defiant and does not treat us with the same respect as his sibling. My husband says because we did it for one child, we must do it for the other. I disagree, and think it's rewarding bad behavior. -- Feuding in Wisconsin

There's a new worker lately in the Marriage and Family Life Department at Southern Connecticut State University - known for his cheerful greetings, his ability to defuse tense situations and, of course, his wagging tail. Madison, a 20-month-old Shih Tzu (pronounced "sheet-sue"), has become what his owners, Edward and Barbara Lynch, call a "psychotherapy dog." (Edward is the chairman of the department, and Barbara is a professor there.)
Madison sits in on sessions when asked, allows himself to be petted by children and adults during emotional moments and, in several notable instances, has even brought families back together.
