  • Donating your used car or truck to a charity has become popular in recent years. It's an easy way to support a good cause and get a tax deduction at the same time. Before 2005, it was up to each taxpayer to decide how much his or her donation was worth based on the estimated fair market value of the vehicle being donated. But, concerned about inflated valuations and excessive deductions, the IRS tightened the rules last year. Because most charities sell donated vehicles at auction, the IRS now uses the gross auction proceeds as the best estimate of fair market value. For most donations, that's the maximum amount you can claim as a deduction. If the value is over $500, the charity will send you a Form 1098-C, or an equivalent statement, showing the gross proceeds. • Wondering how much the vacuum you gave to charity was worth, now that it's tax time? The IRS allows you to deduct "fair market value" for items in "good" condition or better but does not set specific amounts. Price your donations too high, and you could prompt an audit, requiring you to prove their worth. Go too low, and you lose out on deductions. Luckily there are many pricing guides. The Salvation Army has a Valuation Guide with a range of estimates for dozens of items. Bicycles are $15 to $65, sweaters are $2.50 to $8, a floor lamp is $7.50 to $40.

  • Owners wishing to tear down a building but not wanting demolition costs to be added to their basis in the land under IRC section 280B should consider making a charitable donation of the building. Fire departments can use the building for training exercises and will demolish the building in the process. The taxpayer will receive a current deduction for the fair market value of the building at the time of the donation. The Tax Court has supported this arrangement, stating that the community benefit of such donations outweighs the incidental benefit to the taxpayer.
