Defending one's territory becomes the hidden theme as [Morgan Spurlock] continues to walk up to strangers and stick a microphone in their faces. And the greatest threat, in their notso-humble opinions, is the good ol' U.S. of A. Spurlock, who seems to hail from the left side of the political spectrum, isn't about to argue with that. But what's interesting is the sheer number of times someone says he loves the American people but hates the American government. Can that possibly be true? And, if so, is there a way we can build on it? Perhaps the chief value of the movie is the glimpse it provides of the way the Muslim world sees us. Compare that to Albert Brooks' Looking for Comedy in the Muslim World, which only showed us how Brooks thought the Muslim world sees us. When he's not making ...
Due diligence is a fact-finding mission or investigative exercise designed to provide the information required to meet a specific goal or objective. Typically, it is used when a business is involved in a purchase or sale or requires financing. However, distressed organizations also require due diligence to address the decision to attempt a turnaround or to liquidate the organization. Most organizations move along a continuum. At one end is the custodial environment of a relatively healthy or robust organization. At the other is distress or even crisis. There are many points in between, and they are not static. The organization in decline represents a special challenge to the process of due diligence. It is a harsh, extreme, ambiguous and exigent environment. In this setting, time is sho...

Law enforcement, with help from University of Memphis criminologists, has been able to reduce serious crimes in Memphis by more than 25 percent in the past five years. Now comes the tricky part - making those gains stick, by devising ways to prevent a new generation of crime and criminals.
NEW YORK, April 17 /U.S. Newswire/ -- A group of 30 young Jewish and Rwandese activists from the U.S., South Africa, Israel and Europe, including a survivor of the genocide in Cambodia and in Bosnia, returned from a trip to Rwanda this weekend after spending 10 days in Rwanda on a fact-finding mission. We live in a cynical world. And for precisely this reason, it is all the more noteworthy and admirable when honorable people are willing to speak with integrity. Richard Goldstone's admission in an April 1 opinion article that, in good conscience, he can no longer endorse the conclusions of his 2009 fact-finding mission on the Gaza conflict marks a watershed moment. The public renunciation of the Goldstone Report by its primary author represents an important victory for intellectual honesty. Indeed, as John F. Kennedy observed in "Profiles in Courage," "A man does what he must - in spite of personal consequences, in spite of obstacles and dangers and pressures - and that is the basis of all human morality." Having invested his personal credibility in a process that has since become syno...
Two of America's top soldiers in Afghanistan gave high marks to Iowa soldiers serving in the country. S. Rep. Bruce Braley, D-Iowa, returned earlier this week from a congressional fact-finding mission to Afghanistan, where he met with Gen. David Petraeus and other top commanders. Braley recalled conversations with Petraeus and Maj. Gen. John F. Campbell, commander of the Army's 101st Airborne Division.
Few New Mexicans today are familiar with the Marques de Rub. A member of the Spanish nobility, he carried royal orders in 1766 to conduct a major inspection of all 21 presidios guarding the frontier of northern New Spain (Mexico). Those presidios, or forts, had been intended to hold in check Indian raiders, especially Apaches who terrorized Spanish settlements from Texas to the Gulf of California. But they had been largely ineffective.
I was thinking: If we were to audit the campaign contributions from one Roger Clemens, might we get a clearer picture as to why the Clemens-Brian McNamee hearing on Capitol Hill Wednesday turned into a disgraceful display of partisan politics? At the very least, we might understand why our very own Christopher Shays was so moved to embarrass himself during the proceedings. If the hearing was a fact-finding mission with regard to the Mitchell Report, what was Shays hoping to accomplish by insisting, in bullying fashion, that Brian McNamee classify himself as a drug dealer?
