We live in a cynical world. And for precisely this reason, it is all the more noteworthy and admirable when honorable people are willing to speak with integrity. Two of America's top soldiers in Afghanistan gave high marks to Iowa soldiers serving in the country. S. Rep. Bruce Braley, D-Iowa, returned earlier this week from a congressional fact-finding mission to Afghanistan, where he met with Gen. David Petraeus and other top commanders. Braley recalled conversations with Petraeus and Maj. Gen. John F. Campbell, commander of the Army's 101st Airborne Division.

Few New Mexicans today are familiar with the Marques de Rub. A member of the Spanish nobility, he carried royal orders in 1766 to conduct a major inspection of all 21 presidios guarding the frontier of northern New Spain (Mexico). Those presidios, or forts, had been intended to hold in check Indian raiders, especially Apaches who terrorized Spanish settlements from Texas to the Gulf of California. I was thinking: If we were to audit the campaign contributions from one Roger Clemens, might we get a clearer picture as to why the Clemens-Brian McNamee hearing on Capitol Hill Wednesday turned into a disgraceful display of partisan politics? At the very least, we might understand why our very own Christopher Shays was so moved to embarrass himself during the proceedings. If the hearing was a fact-finding mission with regard to the Mitchell Report, what was Shays hoping to accomplish by insisting, in bullying fashion, that Brian McNamee classify himself as a drug dealer?
