Of course, besides the pure delight of biting into hot, butter-slathered crumpets, it wouldn't be tea time without little cookies, tiny cakes and cups of fragrant, steaming tea.
While recipes for crumpets are hard to find, the diligent seeker who looks to that Victorian know-it-all Mrs. Isabella Beeton will not come up empty-handed. Beeton's Book of Household Management was first published in London in 1861, and that 1,100 page repository of wisdom continues to inspire after nearly 150 years. It is available today in facsimile, abridged, CD-ROM, or even Kindle editions (JEWISH STAR, March 9, 2001).
A mistress of the house, according to Mrs. Beeton, "must be thoroughly acquainted with the theory and practice of cookery." She counsels that discontent at home frequently has its source in "...

There exists a variety of possibilities ranging from merely displaying a finished editorial text, to presenting a highly annotated edition that enables users to explore the various underlying sources interactively. The drawback is, nonetheless, that the interactive playback may at times be interrupted since the drive needs extra time to find and read the data for alternate versions of the playback which are compiled on the fly. Everyone who cannot afford expensive facsimile editions (and makes a living as a Mozart scholar) will be delighted to be able to get a digital facsimile with an introduction to both the work and the source on a CD-ROM that costs as little as an ordinary audio recording (ca. $17).

To increase awareness for her authors and have a good time doing it, [Kathy Patrick] founded the "Pulpwood Queens" book club, with the motto, "Wearing tiaras are mandatory and reading good books is the rule." FoUowing the Oxford Magazine article on her shop, Patrick and her queens were featured on Oprah's Oxygen Network and "Good Morning, America." Patrick says the club's popularity-it has spawned chapters across the country and internationaUy-can be explained by her simple mantra. "Books can entertain, enlighten, and they don't all have to be homework," she says. "They can be fun. I think sometimes school takes all the fun out of reading. How many points am I going to get for reading this, you know?

In part, that historical circumstance accounts for the apologetic tone of the UJE noted at the time by critic Julius H. Greenstone in two excellent analyses in the Jewish Quarterly Review. Moreover, the UJE project hewed to Landman's wideranging efforts on behalf of Christian-Jewish relations, and his desire to explain Judaism to Christians and to combat antiSemites with the facts.
Some 650 scholars worked on the UJE, producing 5 million words on 40,000 subjects in 10 volumes. At least statistically, that stands up well against the JE (16,606 entries, 8.17 million words, 2,464 illustrations, 605 collaborators, 10 volumes) and the EJ (25,000 entries, 8,000 illustrations, 300 editors, 16 volumes). But the UJE, in spite of having a number of eminent scholars on its board, was aimed largely...
